New style reel handle

The estimated 1000lb hammerhead shark at left was caught by Capt. Ben Chancey of the famous "Chew On This" fishing show and Capt. Bucky Dennis. Ben was using an Avet T-Rex on a Crowder Stand Up rod.

Ben also used an Avet to catch the 48lb snook pictured below. That's our own Capt. Jason Le Valley, videographer for the show, holding the potential world record snook.

The Power of the Avet Drag

When it comes to big game reels with serious, fish-stopping drag, no other reel company has turned as many heads (both people and fish) as Avet. This small, American reel company based in Chatswoth, California has applied some very unique concepts to the conventional reel and can boast of possibly the strongest drag on the market with their T-RX Quad Two Speed pulling 100 lbs of drag at the strike setting! Most reels in this size class pull 50 to 60 lbs of drag so this is some pretty exciting news if you are going after the biggest of fish.

Capt. Ben Chancey of the very popular "Chew on This" fishing television show first introduced me to these reels and if you have ever seen Ben's show, you know he routinely winching up 300lb Goliath Grouper or battling monster snook. Hearing how many different brands of reels that he and his fishing/video crew destroyed before they switched to Avets is pretty eye opening.

The heart of the Avet reel is an over-sized carbon fiber drag pad. The smallest of the reels, the Avet SX, has one and can pull 9 lbs of drag at strike. This is incredibly impressive for a mini lever drag reel that is the size of a bass tournament reel. The larger of the Avets have more drag washers and more drag and the T-RX Quad has four drag plates - two on each side of the reel. This drag arrangement makes it possible to have free spool even when the drag setting is all the way down. Another innovation found in all the Avets is a unique cast setting on the lever drag allowing the angler to set the reel for casting a lure or bait with much less fear of backlash. Most of the models are even available in a two speed that features an incredibly strong planetary gear system. They range in price from $175 for the SX to $999 for the T-RX Quad 50.

Maybe you are not planning on hooking a goliath grouper or a 40 lb snook, but it is nice to know that if it does happen your reels gears won't implode and the drag is up to the challenge. What's even better is that you own a top shelf, yet affordable, lever drag reel that was engineered, machined, and made in America.
